William Sutherland, 9th of Duffus (who died in 1616) was an important Scottish nobleman. He belonged to a branch of the famous Clan Sutherland family. This branch was known as a "cadet" line, meaning they were a younger part of the main family.

His Early Life

William Sutherland was the second son of Alexander Sutherland, 8th of Duffus. His mother was Janet, who was the daughter of James Grant of Freuchie.

Becoming the Laird of Duffus

In 1579, William officially took over the lands of Duffus and Greschip. These lands were near a town called Elgin, Moray. He inherited them from his father, Alexander Sutherland, who had passed away. William also gained control of Quarrelwood, which had belonged to his grandfather, William Sutherland, 7th of Duffus.

Even before 1579, it seems William was already acting as the Laird of Duffus. In 1574, he was asked by the Lords of Session (a high court in Scotland) to make sure some marriage agreements were kept. These agreements had been made by his father and older brother with George Sinclair, 4th Earl of Caithness.

William also confirmed an old agreement that his great-grandfather, William Sutherland, 6th of Duffus, had made. This agreement was about the lands of Skelbo, which his family held from the Earls of Sutherland. In 1588, William made his lands of Duffus, Quarrelwood, and Greschip into a new special area called the "barony of Duffus." This gave him more control over these lands.

Important Agreements and Lands

In 1606, William made a peaceful agreement with the town of Dornoch. This agreement helped to clearly mark the boundaries between the town's lands and his own lands of Skelbo and Pronsy. This helped avoid arguments over who owned what land.

William Sutherland, 9th of Duffus, passed away in the year 1616.

William Sutherland, 9th of Duffus, was married two times.
