William Hood Walrond, 1st Baron Waleran (born February 26, 1849 – died May 17, 1925) was an important British politician. He was also known as Sir William Walrond, Bt for a time. He belonged to the Conservative Party.

William Walrond served in the British Parliament from 1880 until 1906. After that, he became a "peer," which meant he joined the House of Lords. He held important government jobs, like Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.

Early Life and Military Service

William Walrond was born into an important family. His father was Sir John Walrond, 1st Baronet. William went to Eton, a famous school.

After school, he joined the army. He became a captain in the Grenadier Guards in 1872. Later, he was a Lieutenant-Colonel in a volunteer army group. He also worked as a Justice of the Peace (J.P.) and a Deputy Lieutenant (DL) for Devon. These roles involved keeping law and order and representing the Crown.

A Passion for Cricket

William Walrond was not just a politician; he was also a keen cricketer! He played for the Eton first team in 1866 and 1867.

He continued to play for many amateur teams for years. These included well-known clubs like Quidnuncs, I Zingari, and Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). He even played one "first-class" game for MCC in 1868.

Political Journey

William Walrond started his political career in 1880. He was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for East Devonshire. He kept this seat until 1885.

After changes to the voting areas, he was elected MP for Tiverton. He held this position until 1906. He served as a Junior Lord of the Treasury from 1885 to 1892. This role involved helping manage government finances.

From 1895 to 1902, he was the Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury. This job is often called the "Chief Whip." It means he was in charge of making sure members of his party voted the way the party wanted.

Later, from 1902 to 1905, he became the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. This is a government minister role with various duties. In 1899, he joined the Privy Council. This is a group of important advisors to the British monarch.

In 1889, he inherited the title of "Baronet" from his father. Then, in 1905, he was given a new title: Baron Waleran. This meant he became a member of the peerage and could sit in the House of Lords.

Family Life

Lord Waleran was married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Katharine Pitman, whom he married in 1871. After she passed away in 1911, he married Helene Margaret Morrison in 1913.

He had several children from his first marriage:

  • Hon. Evelyn Maud Walrond (1872–1944).
  • John Neville Hood Walrond (1874–1902), who sadly passed away at a young age.
  • Hon. William Lionel Charles Walrond (1876–1915). He also became an MP for Tiverton, just like his father. Sadly, he was killed during the First World War.
  • Hon. Dorothy Katherine Walrond (died 1952).

Lord Waleran passed away in May 1925, at the age of 76. His grandson, William, inherited his title.
