William Wang (Chinese: 王蔚; pinyin: Wáng Wèi) is a successful businessman from Taiwan and the United States. He is known for starting and leading a company called Vizio. Vizio makes popular electronics, especially televisions.
Early Life and Learning
William Wang was born in Taipei, Taiwan. When he was 12 years old, he moved to Hawaii in the United States. Two years later, at age 14, he moved again to California.
He went to the University of Southern California. In 1986, he earned a degree in electrical engineering. This field of study is all about designing and building electronic systems and devices.
How Vizio Started
In 2000, William Wang went through a difficult experience. This event made him think deeply about his life and future plans. After this, he decided to close his other businesses. He then focused on entering the television market.
In 2001, a company called Gateway, Inc. asked William Wang for help. They wanted to create a plan for selling televisions. Wang's team helped Gateway develop a 42-inch plasma TV system. This TV was priced at $2999, which was much lower than similar TVs selling for over $6000 at the time.
Soon after, William Wang decided to start his own company to make televisions.
Creating Vizio Inc.
In 2002, William Wang launched his new company, originally named V Inc. He started it with Laynie Newsome and Ken Lowe, using $600,000. His main idea was to offer televisions that were both affordable and high quality. He also wanted to provide excellent customer support.
To make this plan work, he focused on keeping the company's operations very efficient. Later, the company's name was changed to VIZIO Inc. This new name was easier to say and was already used for their plasma TV. Today, VIZIO is one of the biggest sellers of LCD HDTVs in North America. The company earns billions of dollars each year.
