William d'Aubigny (born around 1109, died October 12, 1176) was an important English nobleman. He was also known by names like William d'Albini. His father was William d'Aubigny, and his mother was Maud Bigod.
William was a very loyal supporter of King Stephen of England. King Stephen made him the first Earl of Arundel (also called Earl of Sussex) around 1138. Later, he also became the Earl of Lincoln.
In 1153, William helped make a peace agreement. This agreement was between King Stephen and Henry Plantagenet. It was called the Treaty of Wallingford. This treaty helped end a difficult time in England known as The Anarchy. This was a period when there was a lot of fighting over who should be king.
When Henry Plantagenet became King Henry II, he confirmed William's title as Earl. King Henry II also gave William direct ownership of Arundel Castle. William stayed loyal to King Henry II. He helped the king during a rebellion in 1173 led by Henry the Young King.
William also built Castle Rising Castle in Norfolk.
Helping Others: The Order of St. Lazarus
William d'Aubigny was one of the first English nobles to support the Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem. This was a special group of crusaders. Before 1146, William gave them land at Wymondham. He also built a hospital for people with leprosy near his castle in Norfolk.
His wife, Adeliza, also gave a lot of help to hospitals for people with leprosy. These hospitals were in places like Wilton, Wiltshire and Arundel. William's cousin, Roger de Mowbray, and his family also became big supporters of the Order's main hospital at Burton Lazars.
