A Look Back: Willow City's History

People started settling in the Willow City area even before the American Civil War. Many English-speaking settlers gathered here, especially since Gillespie County was mostly settled by German-speaking people.

In 1877, a post office was opened, and the community was simply called "Willow." Ten years later, as it grew, its name changed to "Willow City." Around the year 1900, about 132 people lived there.

However, the number of people living in Willow City started to decrease after that. In 1964, only 17 people lived there. But since the 1970s, the population has stayed around 75 people.

Willow City was once home to the Alfred Pfeil Gin, a place where cotton was processed. In 1924, there was an explosion involving a boiler at the gin. The force of the explosion blew out parts of the building's walls.

Even though Willow City doesn't have its own city government, it does have its own post office. The ZIP code for Willow City is 78675.
