Wilson Bluff was first written about in 1885. Back then, it was called Wilson Point. Later, in a sailing guide from 1914-1918, it was officially named Wilson Bluff. It is believed to be named after "Professor Wilson of Victoria." A surveyor named E. A. Delisser gave it this name. He worked for a company that raised farm animals. The bluff is also known by another name, Yirgila, in South Australia.
