Wilsonia is a small community in California. It is located in Tulare County, California. This special place is surrounded by Kings Canyon National Park. Wilsonia sits high up in the mountains. It is about 6,617 feet (2,017 meters) above sea level. It is called a census-designated place (CDP). This means it is a place that the government counts for population, but it is not an official city or town.

How Wilsonia Started

Wilsonia began a long time ago. In the 1870s, it was just a large piece of land. Someone claimed it to live and work on. This is called "homesteading." Over time, the land was sold a few times. Then, it was divided among different people. The village was officially created in 1918.

Naming Wilsonia

The name "Wilsonia" has an interesting story. It comes from the 1916 United States presidential election. This was an election to choose the President of the United States. The votes from mountain communities in California were very important. A big snowstorm delayed these votes. When they finally arrived, they helped President Woodrow Wilson win the election again. To remember this important event, the community was named Wilsonia in his honor.

Where Wilsonia Is Located

Wilsonia covers a small area. It is about 0.3 square miles (0.7 square kilometers). All of this area is land. There is no water within its borders.

Surrounded by Nature

Even though Wilsonia is surrounded by Kings Canyon National Park, the village itself is not part of the park. Most of the land in Wilsonia is owned by private people. There are more than 200 cabins in the village. Many of these cabins are used as summer homes. People also use them for vacations. In 2010, only 5 people lived in Wilsonia all year round.

Wilsonia's Historic Importance

The entire community of Wilsonia is very special. In 1996, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. The historic district includes 139 old buildings and structures that help tell its story.
