Windang is a suburb located in Wollongong, Australia. It sits on a narrow piece of land that protects the entrance of Lake Illawarra from the Pacific Ocean. Windang is a great spot for outdoor activities.
People love Windang for its fishing, prawning, boating, and water sports like windsurfing and yachting. It's about 98 kilometers south of Sydney. You can drive there in about 20 minutes from Wollongong city center. It's also only seven minutes from Shellharbour.

History of Windang
The name "Windang" comes from an Aboriginal word. It means "scene of a fight." This name tells us a bit about the area's past.
In 1920, a man named William Turnbull bought land here. He built a two-story house called "Wyndang House." This house became an important part of the community.
Windang Post Office
In 1926, the Post Office connected to Wyndang House became official. It was named Windang Post Office. Before that, it was unofficially called Lake Illawarra Post Office.
Mr. Turnbull asked for the name change. The authorities agreed, as long as the spelling was "Windang." This was the correct name for a nearby island and a survey point.
Tourism and Recreation
Tourism and fishing have always been very important in Windang. In the 1930s, guesthouses started appearing. They were built to welcome visitors.
The Windang Camping Reserves have also been popular for a long time. People still enjoy camping and outdoor fun there today.
