A Look at Its History
The first Episcopal group in Windsor Township started in 1816. A pioneer named Solomon Griswold helped build their first church. This first church was used for a short time. The building you see today replaced it in 1832. It was built in a different spot, west of Windsor Center.
Changing Styles Over Time
When the church was built, the Greek Revival style was very popular. This style looks like ancient Greek temples. Later, another style called Gothic Revival became popular. This style looks like old European cathedrals. The Christ Church building was updated to include parts of the Gothic Revival style.
More work was done on the church in 1961. The inside of the building was greatly improved. This work was so good that it even won an award! After this, the building stopped being a church. It became a museum instead.
What the Church Looks Like
The old Christ Church building is made of wooden planks. It shows a mix of both Greek and Gothic Revival styles. The building is shaped like a rectangle. It has tall, pointed windows all around. The main door is in the middle of the front.
The roof goes up to a point at each end, like a triangle. On top of the roof, near the front, there is a tower. This tower has a small, pointed top called a pinnacle on each corner.
A Recognized Historic Place
In 1975, the church was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is a very important historic site. It was chosen because of its special architecture. It was also chosen because it played a big part in the local history of Windsor.
The Christ Church is one of four places in Windsor listed on the National Register. The others are the Wiswell Road Covered Bridge, the Windsor Mills Fort and Village Site (an old archaeological site), and the town center at Windsor Center.
The Museum Today
The church building is now run as the Windsor Historical Society Museum. It is open during certain times of the year. Visitors can learn about the history of Windsor Township there.
