Discovering Winfield's Past

Winfield has a rich history that includes more than just trains. People used to mine coal, make bricks, and create pottery here. It was also home to the famous Winfield Truck Stop.

How Winfield Got Its Name

In 1880, a railway company called the Texas and St. Louis Railway was building tracks through Titus County. They asked the people of Gray Rock to help by giving money and land. When Gray Rock refused, a man named W. C. Barrett gave some of his land for a train station.

A small community started to grow around this new station. At first, it was called Barrett. In 1887, a post office opened, and the village was renamed Carr. Then, in 1892, the name changed again to Winfield. This was to honor W. H. Winfield, who was an important person for the railroad.

In 1890, only 47 people lived in Winfield. By 1896, the town had three churches, several stores, and a pottery factory. The population grew to about 150.

The early 1900s were a time of big growth for Winfield. By 1914, it had a brick company, a newspaper, many stores, and two banks. The population reached about 700 people. However, the two banks joined together in 1919, and then that bank closed a few years later.

By 1925, Winfield's population had dropped to 629, and by the 1940s, it was 350. The town officially became a city in the 1940s. For many years, the number of people living there stayed about the same. In 1990, 345 people lived in Winfield.
