Ho-Chunk facts for kids
The Ho-Chunk people are also known as the Winnebago. They are a Siouan-speaking tribe of Native Americans. Their original homeland was in the area that is now the state of Wisconsin.
In the 19th century, the Ho-Chunk people were moved from their lands. They were sent to reservations in states like Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota. Today, there are two main Ho-Chunk tribes that the U.S. government officially recognizes. These are the Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin and the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska.
Since the late 20th century, both tribes have worked to build casinos on their lands. These casinos help them earn money for their communities. The Ho-Chunk Nation is also working hard to bring back their traditional language. They even made a special mobile app for the iPhone to help people learn the Hocąk language.
