Early Life and Moving to Hawaii

Winnifred Hudson was born in Sunderland, England, on May 21, 1905. When she was six years old, her family moved to Alberta, Canada. This is where she spent her childhood and grew up.

In 1932, Winnifred decided to take a vacation to Hawaii. She loved the islands so much that she chose to move there permanently in 1934. She settled in the city of Honolulu.

Becoming an Artist

When Winnifred first moved to Hawaii, she worked as a secretary. However, she also had a strong interest in art. She took art classes at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.

Winnifred continued to work as a secretary for many years. But her passion for art grew stronger. When she turned 60, she made a big decision: she quit her job to become a full-time artist! This allowed her to dedicate all her time to painting and creating.

Her Unique Art Style

Winnifred Hudson is most famous for her hard-edge abstract paintings. This style uses sharp, clear lines and shapes, often with flat areas of color. Even though her paintings were abstract (meaning they didn't show things exactly as they look in real life), they often had a subtle connection to nature.

For example, her painting Plant Life and Light shows how she could hint at natural elements in an abstract way. This painting is now part of the collection at the Honolulu Museum of Art.

Besides paintings, Winnifred also created prints and collages. Her artworks can be found in important public collections, including the Hawaii State Art Museum and the Honolulu Museum of Art.

Later Life

In 1995, when Winnifred was 90 years old, she left Hawaii. She moved to California to be closer to her family. She passed away in Davis, California, on May 10, 1996.
