Winona started as a town called Gopher in 1884. Just three years later, in 1887, its name was changed to Winona. The city got its new name from a character named Wenonah. She was the mother of Hiawatha in a famous poem. The poem is called The Song of Hiawatha and was written in 1855.

Winona used to have its own high school. Its sports teams were called the Winona Tigers. The Winona Tigers won a state championship in boys' basketball in 1962. The girls' volleyball team also won state championships in 1971 and 1972.

Now, Winona is home to Triplains High School. This school was formed by combining schools from Winona, Page City, and Russell Springs. Their mascot is the Vikings. For sports, Triplains High School teams now combine with Brewster High School. They play as the Triplains-Brewster Titans.

Getting Around Winona

The U.S. Route 40 highway goes through Winona. The Union Pacific Railroad also passes through the city.
