History of Winslow Cemetery
How the Cemetery Started
The area of Marshfield called Green Harbor was settled in 1637. A person named Edward Winslow started this settlement. He had come to the Plymouth Colony in 1630. The town of Marshfield officially became a town in 1640.
In that same year, some land was given to William Thomas. He was an immigrant from Wales who also arrived in 1630. William Thomas gave some of his land to the town. This land was used to create a burying ground, which is what we now call a cemetery. It was right next to the town's first meeting house.
William Thomas passed away in 1651. People believe his is the oldest grave in the cemetery. Later, in 1832, a famous politician and lawyer named Daniel Webster bought William Thomas's land. Daniel Webster is also buried in this historic cemetery.
