Winterville is a small community in Washington County, Mississippi. It is considered a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means it's an area that the U.S. Census Bureau defines for gathering population data, even though it's not officially a city or town. Winterville is located close to Mississippi Highway 1. It is about 3 miles (5 km) north of Greenville, which is the main city in Washington County. It's also about 4 miles (6 km) south of another community called Lamont.
One of the most interesting things about Winterville is the nearby Winterville site. This is a very important historical place. It has more than twelve large earthwork mounds. These mounds were built by ancient people between the 11th and 15th centuries. The Winterville site is a "National Historic Landmark." This means it's a place recognized for its special historical importance to the United States. The site is a key example of the Plaquemine Mississippian culture. The Natchez Indians are believed to have descended from this culture. Other older cultures also built mounds in this area before them.
Winterville was first officially counted as a CDP in the 2020 United States census. At that time, its population was 96 people.
