Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Wizardry is a series of exciting computer role-playing games. These games were very popular in the 1980s. The first Wizardry games were made for the Apple II computer. Later, they were released on many other computer systems. The newest game in the series, Wizardry 8, is only for Windows computers.

The Wizardry series started as a simple dungeon crawl game. It was created by Andrew C. Greenberg and Robert Woodhead. They wrote the game while they were students at Cornell University. The game was then published by a company called Sir-Tech. David W. Bradley became the main designer for the series after the fourth game.

The Wizardry Game Series

The single game Wizardry grew into a long series of adventures. Here are the main games in the series:

  • Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord (1981)
  • Knight of Diamonds (1982)
  • Legacy of Llylgamyn (1983)
  • The Return of Werdna (1986)
  • Heart of the Maelstrom (1988)
  • Bane of the Cosmic Forge (1990)
  • Crusaders of the Dark Savant (1992) (This game was later remade as Wizardry Gold in 1996)
  • Wizardry 8 (2001)

The first three games in the series told one big story. The last three games also formed a trilogy, meaning they were three parts of a single adventure.
