Wonuts at a Vons supermarket in Encinitas, California

A wonut is a fun and tasty treat that mixes two popular foods: a waffle and a doughnut. It's also sometimes called a doffle, wownut, or waffle-donut. To make a wonut, chefs combine waffle batter and doughnut dough. This mix is first cooked in a waffle iron. After that, it is deep-fried, just like a doughnut. Finally, it gets decorated with yummy toppings, similar to what you find on doughnuts.

The wonut became very popular in the spring of 2014. It started at a place called Waffles Cafe in the Lake View area of Chicago. Soon, its fame spread quickly. Many bloggers and people on social media shared pictures and talked about it. Now, you can find wonuts all over the United States and in other countries too.

How the Wonut Became Popular

The wonut followed a trend of new hybrid foods, like the famous cronut (a mix of a croissant and a doughnut). Waffles Cafe in Chicago had the wonut on its menu for a few months before it became a big hit. In April 2014, many bloggers and users on Instagram started sharing photos of the wonut. This helped the treat become famous across the country.

The wonut was added to the Waffles Cafe menu to celebrate the opening of their second location. The website Thrillist was one of the first to notice this new food. Websites like Jezebel also helped the wonut go viral, meaning it spread very quickly online. The wonut was even featured on the TV show The Chew.

The owner of Waffles Cafe, Alex Hernandez, is credited with creating the wonut. He studied cooking at Le Cordon Bleu. By May 2014, another company called DK's Donuts started making their own version, which they called wownuts, for people in the Los Angeles area. The original Waffles Cafe location, which opened in 2012, closed in 2016.
