About Wood Street Station

A Different Future for Wood Street?
Did you know that Wood Street station almost had a very different future? When the famous Victoria line of the London Underground was being planned, there was an idea for it to end at Wood Street. This would have made Wood Street a major underground station, instead of Walthamstow Central station which is where the Victoria line ends today.
However, in 1961, a decision was made that changed these plans. The Victoria line was built to end at Walthamstow Central instead. If the original plan had gone ahead, the Victoria line part of Wood Street station would have been built above ground, right next to the main railway station that already existed. It's interesting to imagine how different the area might look today if that decision had been different!
