Woodchester is a small place, or locality, located in South Australia. It is part of the Alexandrina Council area. Woodchester was first set up as a private area in 1856. It officially became known by its current name in August 2000.

In October 2008, a small part of Woodchester was moved. This section became part of a nearby place called Bletchley.

What is the History of Woodchester?

The land where Woodchester now stands was bought in 1841. Edward J. Peake bought it for William Leigh. William Leigh was from a place called 'Woodchester Park' in England. The land was then divided into smaller pieces in 1856.

What Was Woodchester Called Before?

Woodchester was originally known by a different name. People used to call it "Tin Pot". There was even a hotel there called the Tin Pot Inn. This inn was a popular stop for people traveling through the area.

The Tin Pot Inn closed its doors in 1867. You can still see some old parts of the building today.

How Did Mining Help Woodchester?

The area around Woodchester also benefited from a successful mine. This mine was called the Wheal Ellen mine. It was located in a nearby area called Highland Valley. The mine helped bring people and business to the region.

When Did Woodchester Get a Post Office and School?

The "Tinpot Post Office" first opened on November 25, 1857. It was renamed the "Woodchester Post Office" on October 29, 1858. This post office served the community for many years. It finally closed on March 31, 1973.
