Woodford was a special area in Essex, England, that had its own representative in the UK Parliament. This area was called a parliamentary constituency. From 1945 until 1964, the people living in Woodford elected one person, known as a Member of Parliament (MP), to speak for them in the House of Commons.

The most famous person to represent Woodford was Winston Churchill. He was the only MP for Woodford during its entire time as a constituency. Before Woodford was created, he represented a nearby area called Epping since 1924. Churchill was the Prime Minister of the UK for a second time while he was the MP for Woodford. He kept this job until he retired in 1964, when he was 89 years old. This was the last area he represented in a very long career in politics, which lasted over 60 years! For the last five years he was an MP, he was known as the "Father of the House," meaning he was the longest-serving MP. A statue of him was put up in Woodford Green in 1959.

What Was the Woodford Constituency?

A parliamentary constituency is like a special district or area that elects one person to represent its people in the country's parliament. The idea is to make sure that people from different parts of the country have a voice in how the country is run.

How Did Woodford's Boundaries Change?

The area that made up the Woodford constituency changed a few times:

  • 1945–1955: It included the Borough of Wanstead and Woodford, and the Urban District of Chigwell.
  • 1955–1964: The area became smaller and only included the Borough of Wanstead and Woodford.

In 1955, the boundaries changed a lot. A new constituency called Chigwell was created, which took away some of the less urban (more countryside) parts of Woodford. After 1964, the Woodford constituency was renamed Wanstead and Woodford. This new area had only small changes to its borders, based on how the local area had grown.

Who Represented Woodford in Parliament?

Woodford only had one Member of Parliament during its time as a constituency.
