Woodlawn is a historic estate house located in Garrison, New York. It sits high above the beautiful Hudson River. This special building was designed in the mid-1800s by Richard Upjohn. He was a famous architect who lived nearby for many years.
Woodlawn later became a school called the Malcolm Gordon School. Today, it is the main office for the Hastings Center. This center is a well-known group that studies bioethics. Bioethics looks at moral questions that come up in medicine and science. In 1982, Woodlawn was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is an important historical site.
Exploring Woodlawn's Design
Woodlawn is a large property covering about 42 acres. It is located on the west side of New York State Route 9D. The estate includes several buildings. Three of these buildings are considered important to its historical listing.
The main house is made of brick and has two stories. It sits on a strong stone foundation. There are also newer, single-story parts made of wood on the north and east sides. The roof is very steep and has a cross-gable design. You can see the wooden rafters under the edges of the roof. Two dormer windows stick out from each side of the roof. A brick chimney is at the south end of the house.
On the front (west) side, there is a special oriel window. This window sticks out from the wall. Above it is a small balcony. A porch with fancy Corinthian columns wraps around the south and west sides of the house.
The addition on the east side was once a separate gym. It is now the center's library. A covered walkway connects it to the main house. The north extension includes a garage, a workshop, and an apartment. A small kitchen area, covered in stucco, was also added to the north side.
There are three other buildings on the property. These include a building that was once a stable and hayloft. Another was a carriage shed, and the third was an ice house. The stable building is now an apartment. The shed and ice house are used for storage today.
A Look at Woodlawn's Past
Woodlawn was first built in 1854 for William Moore. He was a partner in a big importing company in New York City. Moore hired architect Richard Upjohn to design his new summer home. William Moore, his wife, and their family used Woodlawn as a summer getaway for many years.
In 1927, Malcolm Gordon bought the property. He started a boys' boarding school there and named it after himself. Malcolm Gordon made several changes to the estate. The north wing was built in 1931 and made bigger in 1939. The gym was added in 1956. The kitchen wing was built in 1966. Three years later, in 1969, the garage on the north wing was added. The Malcolm Gordon School stayed open until the early 1980s.
About ten years later, the Hastings Center moved into Woodlawn. They made some necessary updates and repairs to the buildings.
