History of Woodmore
The land where Woodmore is now was first owned by a European settler named Thomas Spriggs in 1698. He bought about 500 acres in what was then a forest in the Crown Colony of Maryland.
The first house built in the area was called Pleasant Prospect. It's a two-story brick house built around 1798 by Dr. Isaac Ducket. He was married to Spriggs' granddaughter and made the estate much larger, over 1,000 acres. This house is still standing today at 12806 Woodmore Road.
Over the years, Pleasant Prospect was passed down through different families, including the Bowies and the Walkers. The Walker family, who were big in the lumber business in Washington D.C., owned the house for a long time. Even after selling the house in 1982, some Walker family members continued to farm land on the south side of Woodmore Road. Part of this farmland was later sold to create the Woodmore Meadows community.
Before the 1980s, much of the land in Woodmore was owned by farming families, especially the Walker and Shatenstein families. The Shatenstein family owned large areas of land along Woodmore Road.
In 1977, Prince George's County bought some of the Shatenstein property. They used it to build the Country Club at Woodmore, replacing an older golf club. This country club and the planned gated community were a big project that took 15 years to complete. In 1995, the rest of the Shatenstein land on the south side was sold and developed into the Woodmore South community. In 2010, the northern parts of Woodmore were redefined as a new area called Fairwood.
