The NFL Europa was a special American football league that played its games in Europe. It was controlled by the National Football League (NFL) from the United States. The league ran for many years, from 1991 until 2007.

What Was NFL Europa?

The NFL Europa was created to help grow American football outside of the United States. It gave players a chance to play professionally and helped fans in Europe learn more about the sport.

How It Started

The league first began in 1991. Back then, it was called the World League of American Football (WLAF). In its first two years, the WLAF had teams from different countries:

  • Three teams were from Europe.
  • Six teams were from the USA.
  • One team was from Canada.

After the 1992 season, the league took a break. There were no games in 1993 or 1994.

The League Returns

The league came back in 1995. This time, it focused only on Europe. It had the three original European teams, plus three new ones. This made it a six-team league, all based in Europe.

Name Changes Over Time

The league changed its name a few times:

  • In 1998, its name was changed to NFL Europe.
  • In 2007, it changed again to NFL Europa.

The End of the League

After the 2007 season, the NFL decided to stop the league. This meant that NFL Europa no longer played games.
