WrestleMania III WrestleMania IV WrestleMania V

WrestleMania IV was a major professional wrestling event. It was the fourth yearly WrestleMania show put on by the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). This exciting event took place on March 27, 1988. It was held at the Trump Plaza in Atlantic City, New Jersey. WrestleMania IV was unique because it featured a big tournament to decide who would be the new WWF Champion.

WrestleMania IV: The Tournament for the Title

WrestleMania IV was a special "pay-per-view" event. This means people paid to watch it live on TV. The main reason for this event was to crown a new WWF Champion. The previous champion, Hulk Hogan, had lost his title in a controversial way. So, the WWF decided to hold a big tournament with many top wrestlers.

What Made WrestleMania IV Special?

This WrestleMania was different from others. Instead of just a few big matches, it had 16 matches in total. Most of these matches were part of the championship tournament. This made the event very long and full of action. Fans got to see many different wrestlers compete for the top prize.

The WWF Championship Tournament

The main event of WrestleMania IV was a 14-man tournament. The winner would become the new WWF Champion. Some of the biggest names in wrestling took part. These included Hulk Hogan, André the Giant, Ted DiBiase, and Randy Savage.

  • First Round: The tournament started with many exciting matches. Wrestlers like Ted DiBiase, Randy Savage, and Greg Valentine won their first-round matches.
  • Quarter-finals: In this round, some big matchups happened. Hulk Hogan and André the Giant faced each other. Their match ended in a "double disqualification," meaning both wrestlers were removed from the tournament. This was a big surprise!
  • Semi-finals: After Hogan and André were out, the path to the championship became clearer. Randy Savage and Ted DiBiase both won their semi-final matches. This set up the final match between them.

Other Exciting Matches

Even though the tournament was the main focus, there were other important matches too.

  • Battle Royal: The event started with a big "battle royal." This is a match where many wrestlers are in the ring at once. They try to throw each other over the top rope. The last wrestler left in the ring wins. Bad News Brown won this battle royal.
  • Intercontinental Championship: Brutus Beefcake challenged The Honky Tonk Man for the WWF Intercontinental Championship. Beefcake won by disqualification, but the title did not change hands.
  • Tag Team Championship: The team of Demolition (Ax and Smash) challenged Strike Force (Rick Martel and Tito Santana) for the WWF Tag Team Championship. Demolition won the titles in a tough match.
  • Six-Man Tag Match: The team of The Islanders and Bobby Heenan faced The British Bulldogs and Koko B. Ware.

The Final Match

The final match of the tournament was between Randy Savage and Ted DiBiase. This match was for the vacant WWF Championship. Miss Elizabeth, Savage's manager, was at ringside. Hulk Hogan also came out to support Savage. In the end, Randy Savage defeated Ted DiBiase to become the new WWF Champion. This was a huge moment for Savage and a big way to end the event.
