Writer Rabbit was later updated and released as Reader Rabbit 3 in 1993 for MS-DOS computers. A special "Deluxe" version came out in 1994 for Windows and Macintosh computers. Many features in these games were added because kids, teachers, and parents asked for them!

How to Play the Game

These games are designed to teach young players about sentences and stories. They use different activities and mini-games to make learning fun. You'll learn about the important parts of a sentence, like "who," "what," "where," "when," and "why."

One main way the game teaches is by having you fill in missing words in sentences. The game has over 200 different news stories you can work with. The Deluxe version of Reader Rabbit 3 even has 20 different computer voices to make the stories more exciting!

Writer Rabbit's Mini-Games

The original Writer Rabbit game has six different mini-games. These games help you get ready for a fun party!

  • Icecream Game: In this game, you need to point out which part of a sentence is shown at the top of the screen.
  • The Cake Games (1, 2, and 3): These three games challenge you to match different parts of sentences together.
  • Juice Game: Here, you get to complete sentences by adding the right words.
  • Silly Story Party: This game lets you create your own stories! You can start from scratch or use parts of stories that are already there.

Reader Rabbit 3's Activities

The Reader Rabbit 3 game has five main activities. These activities teach you about how the English language is put together.

  • What's the Scoop? / Who? What? When?: You have to figure out if a sentence is talking about a "what," a "where," a "when," or a "who." It's a bit like the Icecream Game from Writer Rabbit.
  • Clue Hounds / Get the Scoop + Crack the Case: In this activity, you find the "what," "where," "when," and "who" parts in story sentences. After you finish the sentences, you pick a character that goes with the story.
  • Sneak Peek / Rave Reviews: Your task here is to choose a sentence that includes three important things: who or what, what they did, and where they did it.
  • Ed Words / Write Right: This game asks you to fill in the blanks of a paragraph. You'll add the "do what," "where," and "when" parts.
  • Printing Press: After you've worked on a news story, this cool feature lets you print it out!

Game Story

In Writer Rabbit, all the mini-games are part of a party theme. The main goal is to solve puzzles to help Writer Rabbit get ready for a big party!

Reader Rabbit 3 has a new story, but it uses similar mini-games. In this version, the main character, Reader Rabbit, joins the Daily Skywriter newspaper in his hometown of Wordville. He needs to find the right information to write his news stories. This game was made to help kids in grades two to four build important reading skills by using language rules in a real-world newspaper setting.
