The Wyckoff House: A Historic Home
The Wyckoff House is a special place because of its long history. It shows us what homes looked like when New York was first being settled. It's a great example of Colonial style.
Early History and Construction
The land where the Wyckoff House stands was bought around 1636. This purchase was made by Wouter van Twiller, who was in charge of New Netherland at the time. He bought the land from the Lenape native people. Van Twiller ordered several houses to be built on this land. The Wyckoff House was likely built before 1641.
Around 1652, the family of Pieter Claesen Wyckoff moved into the house. This makes it one of the very first buildings constructed by settlers on Long Island. Most of the house you see today was added in the 1800s. However, a small part, like the kitchen section, is even older, dating back to the 1700s.
Protecting a Landmark
The Wyckoff House is owned by New York City. But it is managed and cared for by a group called The Wyckoff House & Association. This group helps keep the house open and teaches people about its history.
Because it is so important, the house has been given special protection. In 1967, it was named a National Historic Landmark. This means it's recognized as a place of great national importance. It is also a New York City designated landmark. This helps make sure it will be preserved for many years to come.
