Discovering Wymah's Past

What Does the Name "Wymah" Mean?

The name Wymah comes from an Aboriginal word. It means "White Cockatoo." This shows a link to the native birds of the area.

When Did Wymah Have a Post Office?

A post office first opened nearby on February 1, 1879. It was called Wagra Post Office back then. In 1912, its name changed to Wymah. The post office served the community until it closed in 1952.

Crossing the River: The Wymah Ferry

The Wymah Ferry is a special way to cross the Murray River. It can only operate when the Hume Dam is full of water. If the water levels are low, the ferry cannot run. This means the ferry's service depends on how much rain the area gets.
