This ranch is home to the Hewisedawi band of the Pit River Tribe. The Pit River Tribe is a group of Native American tribes that the United States government officially recognizes. This tribe includes 9 groups of Achomawi people and 2 groups of Atsugewi people.
The XL Ranch is sometimes known by other names, like XL Rancheria or XL Ranch Indian Reservation.
The reservation was created in 1938. It covers about 9,255 acres (3,745 ha) of land. Around 40 members of the tribe live on the reservation.
Languages Spoken
The people of the XL Ranch traditionally spoke two closely related languages: Achumawi and Atsugewi. These languages are part of a bigger language group called Palaihnihan, which is a branch of the Hokan language family.
Some members of the XL Ranch also speak the Northern Paiute language. This language is part of the Uto-Aztecan language family.
