Burney is a small town in Shasta County, California, United States. It's known as a census-designated place (CDP). In 2020, about 3,000 people lived there. Burney is located on State Route 299.

This town is a great spot for fly fishing. You can find wild brown and rainbow trout in nearby rivers. These include Burney Creek. Another popular place to visit is McArthur–Burney Falls Memorial State Park. This park is home to the beautiful Burney Falls.

Burney got its name from Samuel Burney. He was an early settler in the 1850s. He was found in the valley in 1857. People started calling it "the valley where Burney died." Eventually, it became known simply as "Burney."

The town of Burney sits at the base of an old volcano. This volcano is called Burney Mountain. Its peak is about 7,863 feet (2,397 meters) tall.

Burney in Movies and TV

Parts of the 1986 movie Stand by Me were filmed near Burney. One famous scene shows the boys running from a train. This was filmed at Lake Britton. It is located near McArthur–Burney Falls Memorial State Park.

A local from Burney High School also appeared on TV. Jonathan Schmierer was on The Price Is Right. This was during one of Bob Barker's last shows.
