Xcitium is a company that helps keep computers and the internet safe from cyber threats. It focuses on something called "Zero Trust" cybersecurity. This means it doesn't automatically trust anything trying to connect to a computer network. The company is based in Bloomfield, New Jersey, in the United States. Before 2022, it was known as Comodo Security Solutions Inc. Another company, Sectigo, also came from the original Comodo Security Solutions. Sectigo works with digital certificates.

How Xcitium Started

The company was first started in 1998 in the United Kingdom by a person named Melih Abdulhayoğlu. In 2004, the company moved its main offices to the United States. Xcitium's main goal is to create products that make computers and the internet more secure.

The company also acts as a "certificate authority." This means it issues special digital files called SSL certificates. These certificates help make sure that websites you visit are real and safe. Xcitium also helped create important rules for internet security. For example, it contributed to the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) DNS Certification Authority Authorization (CAA) Resource Record. This record helps protect websites from fake certificates.

In October 2017, a company called Francisco Partners bought the part of Comodo that issued certificates. This part was then renamed Sectigo in November 2018.

In June 2018, the company announced it was expanding its work. It started focusing on security for "Internet of Things" (IoT) devices. These are everyday objects connected to the internet, like smart home devices. In July 2018, Xcitium announced its new main office in Roseland, New Jersey. It also bought CodeGuard, a company that helps keep websites running and recover them if something goes wrong.

Working with Other Security Groups

Xcitium is part of several important groups that work to make the internet safer for everyone.

  • Certificate Authority Security Council (CASC): In 2013, Xcitium became a founding member of this group. The CASC works to solve problems in the internet security industry. It also helps teach people about how to stay safe online.
  • Common Computing Security Standards Forum (CCSF): Xcitium was also a founding member of the CCSF in 2009. This group helps create common rules for computer security. These rules are designed to protect people who use computers. Melih Abdulhayoğlu, the founder of Xcitium, is seen as the founder of the CCSF.
  • CA/Browser Forum: In 2005, Xcitium helped start this group. It includes companies that issue digital certificates and companies that make web browsers. Their goal is to set standards and rules for internet security. Melih Abdulhayoğlu invited top browser makers and certificate companies to discuss how to make digital certificates safer.
