The company also acts as a "certificate authority." This means it issues special digital files called SSL certificates. These certificates help make sure that websites you visit are real and safe. Xcitium also helped create important rules for internet security. In October 2017, a company called Francisco Partners bought the part of Comodo that issued certificates. This part was then renamed Sectigo in November 2018.
