A Unique Snake Family
This blind snake, X. grandidieri, is very unique. It is the only species in its genus, which is like a small group of very similar animals. And this genus, called Xenotyphlops, is the only one in its entire family, called Xenotyphlopidae. So, X. grandidieri is the only member of its kind at three different levels!
What's in a Name?
The second part of the snake's scientific name, grandidieri, is a special tribute. It honors a French naturalist named Alfred Grandidier. Naturalists are scientists who study nature.
Where It Lives
X. grandidieri lives in the northern part of Madagascar. For more than 100 years, scientists only knew about this snake from a few original examples. These examples were found in a very general area of "Madagascar."
Its Home and Environment
This snake prefers to live in shrubland or forest areas. It especially likes places with sand dunes or sandy soil. You can find it from sea level up to about 50 m (160 ft) high.
Reproduction
X. grandidieri is an oviparous snake. This means that the female snake lays eggs, and the baby snakes hatch from those eggs.
