Xyris difformis, also known as the bog yelloweyed grass, is a cool flowering plant found in North America. It belongs to the yellow-eyed-grass family, which is a group of plants known for their bright yellow flowers. You can find this plant growing naturally in the eastern and southern parts of the United States, eastern and central Canada, and even in Central America.
Discovering Bog Yelloweyed Grass
The bog yelloweyed grass, Xyris difformis, is a type of plant that grows back year after year. This means it's a perennial herb. It can grow quite tall, sometimes reaching up to 90 centimeters (about 3 feet). Its leaves look a lot like grass, and they can be as long as 50 centimeters (about 20 inches). When it blooms, it shows off beautiful yellow flowers.
Plant Varieties and Where They Grow
Just like there are different types of apples, there are also different types, or "varieties," of plants. Xyris difformis has a few varieties, and each one tends to grow in specific areas:
- Xyris difformis var. curtissii: This variety is found in Belize and along the coasts of the USA, from Texas all the way to Virginia.
- Xyris difformis var. difformis: This is the most common variety. It grows in Nova Scotia and Ontario in Canada. In the USA, you can find it along the coasts from Maine to Texas. It also grows further inland in states like Michigan, Oklahoma, Indiana, and Arkansas.
- Xyris difformis var. floridana: This variety is found in Belize, Honduras, and Nicaragua in Central America. In the USA, it grows along the coasts from Louisiana to the Carolinas.
