In 2005, Ya Boy signed with a record label called Done Deal Entertainment. He also worked with SMC Recordings. That year, he released his first album, Rookie of the Year.

In 2006, he joined another record label, The Black Wall Street Records, which was started by the rapper the Game. Ya Boy appeared on their mixtape, The Black Wall Street Journal, Vol. 1. He then started working with popular music producers like Scott Storch and Cool & Dre. Cool & Dre produced his 2008 song, "Holla at Ya Boy".

In 2009, Ya Boy started his own record label called Black Card Music. He then signed a deal with Mack 10's label, Hoo-Bangin' Records. He didn't release any music with them. Instead, in 2010, he signed with Akon's labels, Konvict Muzik and Kon Live Distribution.
