History of Yadkinville
The area where Yadkinville now stands was chosen as the county seat in 1850. This was when Yadkin County was first created. The town was first named Wilson. This name honored Louis D. Wilson, a lawmaker who died in the Mexican War.
However, the name was changed to Yadkinville in 1852. Another town in North Carolina, Wilson, North Carolina, already had that name. When the county seat was first set up, there was only one house in the whole town. Yadkinville officially became a town in 1857.
The first courthouse was built in 1853. It was a two-story building made of brick. William White from Hamptonville, North Carolina built it. The bricks were made by hand on a farm north of town. This old courthouse was taken down in 1958. A new building was then built in its place.
The Second Yadkin County Jail is an important historical building. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. This means it is a special place that is protected for its history.
