He was a leader, known as a Caliph, of Córdoba twice. His first time as Caliph was from 1021 to 1023, and his second was from 1025 to 1026. Yahya's Rise to Power
Yahya started his career as the governor of Ceuta in 1016. He got this important job from his father. After his father passed away, Yahya did not agree that his uncle, al-Qasim al-Ma'mun, should be the new Caliph.
Yahya gathered an army of Berber soldiers and marched from Málaga towards Córdoba. When al-Qasim heard Yahya was coming, he left the city and went to Seville. This allowed Yahya to become Caliph of Córdoba.
First Time as Caliph
Yahya ruled Córdoba from 1021 until 1023. However, his uncle al-Qasim soon managed to take the throne back. After this, al-Qasim was also removed from power by another group, the Umayyad party. They chose Abd ar-Rahman V to be the new Caliph.
Return to Power
Yahya then moved to Málaga. He managed to capture al-Qasim in Jerez de la Frontera and had him removed from power. In 1025, Yahya gathered another army to march on Córdoba. The Caliph at that time, Muhammad III, heard about Yahya's attack and quickly fled to Zaragoza.
With no Caliph in Córdoba, the city's leaders formed a council to govern. After about six months, they asked Yahya to come back and become Caliph again. He arrived on November 9, 1025.
Leaving Córdoba
After a few days, Yahya decided to leave the government of Córdoba to his main advisor, Abu Ja`far Ahmad ben Musa. Yahya himself returned to Málaga, which was a safer place for him.
Unfortunately, riots started in Córdoba. In June 1026, the people of Córdoba forced Yahya's advisor to leave. They then chose a new Caliph, Hisham III, who was from the Umayyad family. This event marked the final end of the Hammudid dynasty's rule in Córdoba.
Ruler of Málaga
After being permanently removed from Córdoba, Yahya created his own independent kingdom. This kingdom was called the Taifa of Málaga. He ruled this kingdom until he died in 1035.
