Yara is a town and a municipality in the Granma Province of Cuba. It is located between the cities of Bayamo and Manzanillo, near the Gulf of Guacanayabo. The name "Yara" means "place" in the old Taíno language.

A Look Back at Yara's History
The Brave Chief Hatuey
A long time ago, in 1512, a brave Taíno chief named Hatuey was burned in Yara. He had led a fight against the Spanish soldiers. Hatuey is remembered as "Cuba's First National Hero." This event also led to a famous Cuban story called "La Luz de Yara" (The Light of Yara).
The Cry of Yara and Independence
On October 10, 1868, a very important event happened in Yara. It was called El Grito de Yara, which means "The Cry of Yara." This moment marked the beginning of the Ten Years' War. This war was the first big step towards Cuba's independence.
When Yara Became a Municipality
Yara officially became its own municipality in 1912. Before that, it was part of Manzanillo.

The municipality of Yara is divided into several areas, often called barrios. These include Yara itself, Yara Arriba, Veguitas, Buey de Gallego, Coco, Caboa, Cabagán, Calambrosio, Canabacoa, Cayo Redondo, José Martí, Los Cayos, Mateo Romás, and Sofía.

- Tete Puebla (born 1940) is a Cuban politician.
- Harry Villegas (1940–2019) was a Cuban revolutionary.
- Huber Matos (1918–2014) was a Cuban military leader and writer. He was also known for speaking out against the government.
