Yatina's Story: A Look Back in Time
The name Yatina comes from an Aboriginal Australian word. It refers to a black rock found nearby. Yatina officially became a town in July 1874. People started buying land there in September of that year. The Yatina Hotel, a famous building, was also built in 1874.
Two churches opened in Yatina in 1876: St Virgilius Church and the Primitive Methodist Chapel. People had high hopes for Yatina, but a railway line that was supposed to come through the town in 1877 ended up going around it instead. This was a bit disappointing for the town's growth.
Yatina had its own school, which opened in 1879. It taught local children for many years before closing in 1952. In 1886, about 80 people lived in Yatina. The next year, the number was estimated to be around 100 residents.
The official boundaries for the Yatina area were set on December 16, 1999. These boundaries include the original town site. Later, in 2001, the southern part of Yatina was added to the Northern Areas Council. In 2012, a small part of Yatina on its western side was moved to the nearby area of Tarcowie after residents asked for the change.
How Yatina is Governed
Yatina is part of several important government areas. For national elections, it's in the federal division of Grey. For state elections, it's in the electoral district of Stuart. Locally, Yatina is managed by two different councils: the District Council of Orroroo Carrieton and the Northern Areas Council.
What the Land is Used For
As of 2012, the land in Yatina is mainly used for "primary production". This means the area is focused on farming. Farmers grow crops and raise animals like sheep or cattle on large pieces of land.
Yatina in the Media
The town of Yatina, especially the old Yatina Hotel, was used as a main filming spot for a movie. This film was called The Royal Hotel. It was filmed in 2022 and released in 2023.
