Yealering is a small town in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. It is about 220 kilometers (137 miles) south-east of Perth. You can find it between the towns of Wickepin and Corrigin.
The town sits right next to a lake with the same name. Even though Yealering has a small population, it is an important center for the farms nearby. In 2016, about 104 people lived in Yealering.

Discovering Yealering's Past
How Yealering Got Its Name
The name Yealering comes from the Aboriginal people who lived here first. The name was used for the lake as early as 1870. The area was first settled by Europeans in the 1870s. They used the land for grazing animals and later for growing vegetables.
The Lake: A Lifeline for Early Settlers
Yealering Lake was super important for the early settlers. It gave them fresh water, which was very valuable. People would gather on the lake's banks for fun community picnics and sports days. The town became well-known for these events. In dry years, when the lake bed was exposed, they even held horse races right on the dry lake!
Yealering and the Railway
Yealering became a stop on the railway line that connected Wickepin to Corrigin. This part of the Merredin to Narrogin railway line opened on June 8, 1914. The railway helped the town grow and connect with other places.
A World War II Camp
During World War II, from 1944 to 1945, Yealering was home to a prisoner of war (POW) camp. It started with 100 Italian POWs. By the time it closed, there were 125 POWs living there.
Growing into a Town
In 1907, land around Yealering was opened up for people to settle. A group called the Yealering Lake Progress Association was formed in 1908. After the government announced a railway would come through, a town area was planned. In 1912, Yealering officially became a town. It already had a primary school, a post office, and other buildings. A hall made from local bricks was built in 1927.

Today, Yealering is a small town that supports the local farming community. It has a primary school for kids, a recently updated community hall, a general store, and a hotel. You can also find other small businesses and services here.

The nearby lake offers many fun things to do. You can go water skiing on the lake. There's also an 18-hole golf course nearby for those who enjoy golf. If you're looking to stay a while, there's a caravan park right by the lake.
Farming in the Area
The land around Yealering is used for farming. Farmers grow wheat and other cereal crops. The town is also a receival site for Cooperative Bulk Handling. This means farmers bring their harvested grain here to be stored and transported.
