Year without a Summer facts for kids
The Year without a Summer was 1816. It was a very strange year because summer never really arrived in many parts of the world. This happened because of a huge volcano that erupted the year before, in 1815.
That volcano was called Mount Tambora, and it was located in the Dutch East Indies (which is now Indonesia). When it erupted, it sent a massive amount of volcanic ash high into the sky. This ash spread all around the world, blocking out the sun and making the Earth much colder.
A World Without Summer
In many places, especially in Europe and northern North America, the weather stayed cold all year. Summer just didn't happen!
Frozen June and Failed Crops
Imagine this: in places like New England and Germany, lakes were still frozen in the middle of June. Flowers didn't bloom, and every day felt cold, even when it should have been warm. Because of this strange weather, crops couldn't grow properly. This led to a serious problem called famine in many areas, including New England, Germany, and even China. People didn't have enough food to eat.
