The yellow-bellied greenbul (Chlorocichla flaviventris) is a type of songbird. It belongs to the bulbul family, which are small to medium-sized birds. You can find this bird in eastern, southern, and west-central Africa. It likes to live in warm, dry forests and savanna areas. These places are its natural habitat.
About the Yellow-Bellied Greenbul
The yellow-bellied greenbul is known for its bright yellow belly. It is a lively bird that often sings. These birds are part of a larger group called greenbuls. Greenbuls are common in Africa. They are known for their green or yellowish feathers.
What's in a Name?
This bird has had a few different names over time. It was first called Trichophorus flaviventris. Later, scientists changed its name to Chlorocichla flaviventris. This is its official scientific name today.
People also call it by other names. Some of these include the African yellow-bellied bulbul or just the yellow-bellied bulbul. Sometimes it is called the yellow-breasted greenbul. It is important not to confuse it with other birds that have similar names. For example, there is another bird called Alophoixus phaeocephalus which is also known as the yellow-bellied bulbul.
Different Types of Yellow-Bellied Greenbuls
There are three main types, or subspecies, of the yellow-bellied greenbul. These types are slightly different depending on where they live.
- Kenya yellow-bellied greenbul (C. f. centralis): This type lives from southern Somalia to northern Mozambique. It was first described by Anton Reichenow in 1887.
- Zambezi yellow-bellied greenbul (C. f. occidentalis): You can find this type from north-western Angola to western Tanzania. It also lives south to northern Namibia, northern Botswana, northern South Africa, and central Mozambique. Richard Bowdler Sharpe described this type in 1882.
- C. f. flaviventris: This is the original type of yellow-bellied greenbul. It lives in eastern South Africa and southern Mozambique. Andrew Smith first described it in 1834.
