About the Yellow-browed Antbird
This bird gets its name from the yellowish stripe above its eye, which looks a bit like an eyebrow! It's a small bird, and like many antbirds, it often follows swarms of army ants to catch insects that are trying to escape the ants.
Where It Lives
The yellow-browed antbird makes its home in warm, wet forests. These are usually lowland forests, meaning they are not high up in mountains. They prefer places with lots of trees and plants, where they can find food and stay safe. These forests are often called "subtropical" or "tropical moist lowland forests."
What's in a Name?
The scientific name for the yellow-browed antbird is Hypocnemis hypoxantha. An English zoologist named Philip Sclater first described this bird in 1869. The name hypoxantha comes from ancient Greek words. Hupo means "beneath" or "under," and xanthos means "yellow." This part of its name likely refers to some yellow coloring on its underside.
Different Kinds of Yellow-browed Antbirds
Scientists have found that there are two main types, or subspecies, of the yellow-browed antbird. They are very similar but live in slightly different areas:
- H. h. hypoxantha: This type is found in the southeastern part of Colombia, eastern Ecuador, central Peru, and the western part of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil.
- H. h. ochraceiventris: This type lives in the southeastern part of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. It was first described by a scientist named Chapman in 1921.
