Yevlakh (Azerbaijani: Yevlax) is a city located in Azerbaijan. It is about 265 kilometers (165 miles) west of Baku, which is the capital city of Azerbaijan. Yevlakh is its own city, even though it is surrounded by the Yevlakh District.

What's in a Name?
The name "Yevlakh" has a long history. An Armenian historian named Stephen Orbelian mentioned it in the 13th century. He called it Evaylakh.
The name "Yevlakh" comes from an old Turkic language. It means "wetland," which is an area of land that is often wet or covered with water. This meaning was shared by a Soviet geographer in the 20th century.
A Look at History
Yevlakh started as a train station in the 1880s. Local people used to call it "Vagzal," which means "station." In early official papers, it was known as the Yevlakh station of the Yelizavetpol province.
Later, in 1920, it became known as Yevlakh village. The Yevlakh region was officially created on February 20, 1935. On February 1, 1939, Yevlakh was officially named a city.
In 1962, the Yevlakh region was temporarily closed, and its land was divided among other districts. Yevlakh then became an industrial city, focusing on factories and production.
By 1965, Yevlakh became an independent region again. New factories and businesses started to be built in the city. Today, Yevlakh has many long avenues and streets. There are also several parks and monuments dedicated to important figures like Heydar Aliyev.
In September 2023, Yevlakh was chosen as a place for important meetings. Representatives from Nagorno-Karabakh met there after some conflicts in the area.

Yevlakh is located in the Central Aran Economic Region of Azerbaijan. This area often has a dry subtropical climate. This means it usually has hot, dry summers and mild winters.

People of Yevlakh
The population of Yevlakh has been growing. In 2016, the city's population increased by about 7,100 people compared to earlier years.
According to a census in 2009, more than half of the people (55.04%) lived in the city. The rest (44.96%) lived in the surrounding rural areas.
Yevlakh's Economy
Yevlakh is an important center for agriculture and industry. The city has many businesses that process farm products. It also has factories and industrial areas.
Yevlakh is rich in natural resources. These include clay, sand, and gravel. These materials are useful for making things like bricks.
Culture and Fun
Yevlakh has a lively cultural scene. There are 45 libraries in the district, with 10 in the city and 35 in the villages. These libraries hold over 550,000 books!
The city also has 18 culture houses and 22 clubs, where people can gather and enjoy activities. There are 6 music schools for those who want to learn instruments or singing.
Yevlakh has two main museums:
- The Yevlakh History and Ethnography Museum, opened in 2005.
- The Heydar Aliyev Museum, opened in 2006.

The local TV channel, El TV, has its main office in Yevlakh.
Getting Around Yevlakh
By Air
Yevlakh Airport is the only airport in the city. You can get to the city center from the airport by bus. There are flights from Yevlakh to Baku.
By Train
Yevlakh is on a main railway line in Azerbaijan. This line goes from east to west, connecting Baku with other parts of the country. The Kars–Tbilisi–Baku railway also runs through Yevlakh.
This railway is important for both people and goods. It helps transport oil, gravel, and other products.
Yevlakh's Central Railway Station is a key stop for trains. The Kars–Tbilisi–Baku railway connects Turkey, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. This project started in 2007. Once finished, it will link Yevlakh to Tbilisi in Georgia, and then to Akhalkalaki and Kars in Turkey.
