Yi Ryang, also known as Lee Lyang (Hangul:이량, Hanja:李梁) (17 November 1519 – 8 March 1583), was an important politician during the Joseon Dynasty in Korea. His courtesy name, which was a special name given to adults, was Gonggeo (공거, 公擧).
Early Life and Career
Yi Ryang was part of the powerful Jeonju Yi clan, a family connected to the royal family. He was a descendant of Grand Prince Hyoryeong. His older sister, Lady Yi, married Sim Kang. Their daughter, Lady Sim, later became a queen by marrying Grand Prince Gyungwon. This prince later became King Myeongjong.
When he was young, Yi Ryang studied at private schools run by a teacher named Chung Sa-ryong. These schools helped him prepare for a career in government.
In 1546, he passed two important exams called Saengwon and Chinsa. These were the first steps to becoming a government official. Then, in 1552, he passed the main Imperial examination. This exam was very difficult and allowed him to work in the government. After passing, Yi Ryang started working in the Inspection Department. This department helped make sure government officials were doing their jobs correctly.
Rise to Power
Around 1550, Yi Ryang became very powerful. He was quickly promoted by King Myeongjong. He even reached a high rank, a second-level bureaucrat, in just two years. This was a very fast rise in the government.
However, in 1563, it was found that Yi Ryang had gained a lot of money in ways that were not allowed. Because of this, he was removed from his government position. But his punishment was made less severe because another powerful politician, Yun Won-hyeong, helped him.
Yi Ryang died in 1583 while he was living away from the capital, a punishment called exile.
