Early Life and Education

Yisrael Kessar was born in 1931 in Sana'a, a city in Yemen. When he was just two years old, in 1933, his family moved to Mandatory Palestine. This area later became the country of Israel.

His biggest role at the Histadrut was serving as its secretary general from 1984 to 1992. This meant he was the main leader of the entire organization. He also led divisions focused on professional unions, youth, sports, and students.

After the 1992 elections, Kessar was re-elected to the Knesset. Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin then appointed him as the Minister of Transportation. In this role, he was in charge of things like roads, trains, and public transport in Israel. He held this important position until 1996.
