Yityish "Titi" Aynaw (Hebrew: טיטי איינאו; Amharic: ይታይሽ አየነው; born 23 June 1991) is an Israeli model and television personality. She is famous for winning the Miss Israel 2013 beauty pageant. Titi Aynaw made history as the first person of Ethiopian-Jewish heritage to win this national title. After becoming Miss Israel, she represented her country in the Miss Universe 2013 competition.
Early Life and Education
Titi Aynaw was born in Gondar Province in Ethiopia. Her family belonged to the Beta Israel community, which is a group of Ethiopian-Jewish people. Even though her family was not rich, Titi remembers her childhood as often happy.
Sadly, Titi lost her father when she was very young. Her mother passed away when Titi was ten years old. After this, Titi and her brother Yellek moved to Israel to live with their grandparents. This move is called making Aliyah, which means moving to Israel. Titi was twelve years old when they settled in Netanya, Israel.
When she first arrived in Israel, Titi found it hard to get used to the new culture. Learning to speak Hebrew was also a challenge. However, she soon started doing very well. In school, Titi was the class president. She also competed in track and field sports. She even won a national competition for student filmmaking.
After finishing school, Titi joined the Israel Defense Forces. This is a mandatory service for many young people in Israel. She served as a lieutenant in the Israeli Military Police Corps. After her service, Titi worked in a clothing store. Later, she studied at the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya in Herzliya.
Career Highlights
Titi Aynaw started her journey in beauty pageants by chance. A friend signed her up for the Miss Israel 2013 competition. At that time, Titi had no experience in modeling. She went on to win the competition in February 2013.
Her victory brought her a lot of attention both in Israel and around the world. She was the first black Israeli woman to be crowned Miss Israel. Many people from the Beta Israel community saw her win as a positive sign. It showed better representation for black Jews and especially Ethiopian Jews in Israel.
While she was Miss Israel, Titi worked to help others. She raised awareness about how difficult it was for Ethiopian Jews to make Aliyah to Israel. She also helped several of her own relatives come to Israel. Their requests to immigrate had been turned down many times before.
After her win, Titi Aynaw was invited to a special event with Barack Obama and Shimon Peres. Obama admired Titi and called her a "role model." As Miss Israel, Titi represented her country in the Miss Universe 2013 competition. This event took place in Moscow, Russia. She did not place among the finalists in the competition.
Later, The Jerusalem Post newspaper named Titi Aynaw the 39th most influential Jew of 2013. After her time as Miss Israel ended, she crowned Mor Maman as the next Miss Israel in March 2014.
