Yogi's First Christmas is an animated TV movie from 1980. It stars the famous Yogi Bear and was made by Hanna-Barbera. The movie first aired on November 22, 1980. It was shown on different TV channels across the country. For many years in the 1980s, it was often shown in parts during the week of Christmas. The film was written by Willie Gilbert and directed by Ray Patterson.
This movie used some songs from another Christmas special called Casper's First Christmas. These songs were "Comin' Up Christmas Time" and "Making A Big To-Do". They were re-recorded for Yogi's movie. Also, Boo Boo's song "Hope" had been heard before. It was in two other Christmas specials: A Christmas Story (1972) and A Flintstone Christmas (1977).
Hanna-Barbera was known for using a style called limited animation. This movie had more details than their usual TV shows. However, it was not as fully animated as a movie made for theaters, like Hey There, It's Yogi Bear from 1964.

Story of Yogi's First Christmas
Yogi and Friends Wake Up for Christmas
Usually, Yogi and his best friend, Boo Boo, sleep through winter. This is called hibernation. But this year, they wake up early! Their friends Huckleberry Hound, Snagglepuss, and Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy come to Jellystone Lodge for Christmas.
Meeting New Characters at the Lodge
They are joined by Ranger Smith, who looks after the park. Also there are Mr. Dingwell, the hotel manager, and Otto, the chef. The lodge owner is Mrs. Sophie Throckmorton. She has a nephew named Snively, who is a bit of a spoiled brat. Everyone wants to keep Mrs. Throckmorton happy. If she's not happy, she might close the lodge.
Herman the Hermit's Pranks
The lodge has not been very popular lately. This is because of Herman the Hermit. He is a grumpy person who lives alone and hates Christmas. He just wants to be left by himself. Yogi and Boo Boo join the lodge staff. They woke up because of the music and walked into the kitchen.
Yogi's New Job and Heroic Act
Yogi's first job is to drive the snowplow. While doing this, he saves Mrs. Throckmorton from an avalanche. Herman the Hermit caused the avalanche. Later, Yogi works as a bellhop. Ranger Smith tells him to make sure Mrs. Throckmorton likes him.
Snively's Tricks and Yogi's Wins
Snively tries to play tricks on Yogi to make him look bad. But Yogi always ends up doing well. In one trick, Snively gets Yogi to join a figure skating contest. Snively is also in the contest. Snively gets high scores, but Mrs. Throckmorton secretly hopes he loses. She wants him to learn a lesson about his bad attitude. Yogi is the last one to skate. He impresses the judges and wins the contest! Snively is very upset that Yogi beat him. But his aunt Sophie tells him that Yogi won fairly. She says losing is a part of life.
Yogi Becomes Chief of Security
Herman causes more problems, but Yogi saves Mrs. Throckmorton each time. Because of this, Mrs. Throckmorton tells Mr. Dingwell to make Yogi the chief of security. Cindy Bear also wakes up from her hibernation. She comes to help Yogi because she cares about him.
Teaching Snively a Lesson
Yogi is tired of Snively's tricks. He gets back at Snively during an ice fishing contest. Mrs. Throckmorton agrees that Snively needed to learn a lesson. Snively gets very angry and runs away. He meets Herman the Hermit, and they team up to ruin Christmas. But Yogi always stops their plans.
Christmas Joy and Hibernation
In the end, Herman and Snively are forgiven. They are invited to the Christmas party. They are touched by everyone's kindness and change their ways. Then, Santa Claus comes down the chimney! He brings a picnic basket full of food for Yogi. But Yogi falls asleep because his natural instinct is to hibernate. Santa says Yogi and Boo Boo can have the basket when they wake up in the spring. Finally, everyone takes Yogi, Boo Boo, and Cindy back to their caves to finish their winter sleep.
