Early Life and Learning
Yohji Yamamoto was born in Tokyo, Japan. He first studied law at Keio University and finished in 1966. But instead of becoming a lawyer, he decided to help his mother with her dressmaking business. This is where he learned how to sew and make clothes. He then went on to study fashion design at Bunka Fashion College, graduating in 1969.
Designing Clothes
Yamamoto showed his first fashion collection in Tokyo in 1977. Later, he presented his designs in Paris in 1981 and in New York in 1982. His first collection, called Y's, was for women. It featured clothes that looked like men's garments, with simple shapes, soft fabrics, and dark colors.
He once said that he wanted to make men's clothes that women could wear. He liked the idea of a coat protecting a woman's body. His main fashion lines, Yohji Yamamoto (for women and men) and Y's, are very popular, especially in Tokyo. You can also find them in his stores in Paris and Antwerp, and in fancy department stores.
Yamamoto is famous for his bold and unique designs. He often creates clothes that are very different from current fashion trends. His signature style includes oversized shapes and draped fabrics with different textures. He mostly uses the color black in his collections. He describes black as "modest and arrogant at the same time. Black is lazy and easy – but mysterious."
Around 2009, his company faced some money problems. However, with help, the company was able to get back on track by 2010. Yohji Yamamoto continues to be a leader in fashion, always exploring new creative ideas.
Helping Others Through Fashion
In 2008, the Yohji Yamamoto Fund for Peace was started. This fund helps young fashion designers in China. It also aims to build better relationships between China and Japan. Each year, a new Chinese designer gets a two-year scholarship to study fashion in Japan or Europe. Also, a Chinese model is chosen to walk the runway in Paris.
Yamamoto believes that artists and designers should be passionate and sometimes even a little "angry" to create something new. He said that his fashion show in Beijing was not about politics. He wanted to open a store there so people could be happy shopping for his clothes. He believes that true art makes people happy and also makes them think about society.
