The Yorkshire Sculpture Park (often called YSP) is a special place in West Bretton, England. It's like an art gallery but with art both inside buildings and outdoors in a huge park! You can see amazing sculptures by artists from Britain and all over the world, including famous ones like Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. YSP is set in the beautiful 500-acre parkland of Bretton Hall.

A Brief History of YSP

YSP first opened its doors in 1977. It was the very first sculpture park in the UK! The idea came from outdoor art shows held in London parks. Unlike some other sculpture parks, YSP always has new art to see. This means the art changes often, so there's always something new to discover.

Exploring the Art Spaces

YSP has many different places where its amazing art is shown.

The Parkland: Art Outdoors

The park is part of the Bretton Hall estate. This estate has an 18th-century history. You can still see old features like the deer park and an ice house. Artists often get ideas from the park's history or nature. For example, Andy Goldsworthy created art inspired by the park in 2007.

One cool spot is the deer shelter. An American artist named James Turrell turned it into a special art installation.

Indoor Galleries and Exhibitions

Since the 1990s, YSP has also used indoor spaces. These include the Bothy Gallery and the Pavilion Gallery. After some big updates, YSP added an underground gallery. There are also exhibition spaces at Longside, which is a hillside facing the original park.

YSP shows both modern and contemporary sculptures. You can see works by artists like Rodin and Bourdelle. Many British sculptors have had their art shown here. These include Lynn Chadwick and Eduardo Paolozzi. Most exhibitions focus on one artist at a time.

The old St Bartholomew's Chapel, West Bretton has also been restored. This beautiful 1744 building is now used as a gallery space.

Longside Gallery

The Longside Gallery is another great place to see sculptures. It overlooks the main park. This gallery shares its space with the Arts Council Collection. They have different art shows throughout the year. When there isn't an exhibition, the gallery is used for fun educational activities.

The Weston: A New Hub

In July 2019, a brand new visitor centre opened. It's called The Weston. This building has a gallery, a restaurant, and a shop. It was even nominated for a special award for its excellent design!
