Yoshio Kato (加藤 好男, Katō Yoshio, born August 1, 1957) is a former Japanese football player. He was a talented goalkeeper who played for the Japan national team.

Playing for Clubs: Yoshio Kato's Career

Yoshio Kato was born in Saitama, Japan, on August 1, 1957. After finishing his studies at Osaka University of Commerce, he joined a football club called Furukawa Electric in 1980. This club later changed its name to JEF United Ichihara.

Winning Championships with Furukawa Electric

His team, Furukawa Electric, had some great successes. They won the league championship in the 1985–86 season. They also won the JSL Cup twice, in 1982 and 1986.

Becoming a Regular Goalkeeper

For a while, Yoshio Kato was a reserve goalkeeper. This means he was a backup player to the main goalkeeper, Choei Sato. However, in the later 1980s, he became the team's regular goalkeeper. He played in many games, showing his skills. Yoshio Kato retired from playing football in 1993. He played a total of 87 games in the league during his career.

Representing Japan: National Team Career

Yoshio Kato also had the honor of playing for his country. He joined the Japan national team.

His first game for the Japan national team was on June 9, 1980. They played against the Hong Kong team. He played a total of 8 games for Japan between 1980 and 1981.

In 2006, he became the goalkeeper coach for the main Japan national team. He worked with the team until the 2010 World Cup. During this time, he coached under famous managers like Ivica Osim and Takeshi Okada.

Coaching in Thailand and Return to Japan

In 2011, Yoshio Kato moved to Thailand. He became a goalkeeper coach for a club called Chonburi. In 2013, he also took on the role of goalkeeper coach for the Thailand national football team. He returned to Japan in 2015. Since then, he has been coaching at the JFA Academy, helping to develop future football stars.
