Yoshio Kikugawa (菊川 凱夫, Kikugawa Yoshio, September 12, 1944 – December 2, 2022) was a Japanese football player and manager. He was a talented defender who played for the Japan national team.

Playing for Clubs: Mitsubishi Motors

Yoshio Kikugawa was born in Fujieda, Japan, on September 12, 1944. After finishing his studies at Meiji University, he joined the football club Mitsubishi Motors in 1968.

During his time with Mitsubishi Motors, the club achieved great success. They won the Japan Soccer League championships twice, in 1969 and 1973. They also won the Emperor's Cup (a major football tournament in Japan) in 1971 and 1973.

Kikugawa played 94 games in the league and scored 2 goals. He was recognized as one of the best players in the league in 1969, being selected for the Japan Soccer League Best Eleven. He retired from playing football in 1974.

Playing for Japan: National Team Career

Yoshio Kikugawa also played for his country. In October 1969, he was chosen to join the Japan national team for the 1970 World Cup qualification matches.

He made his first appearance for the national team on October 12, 1969, in a game against South Korea. He also represented Japan at the 1970 Asian Games. Kikugawa played a total of 16 games for the Japan national team before his international career ended in 1971.

Coaching Career: Avispa Fukuoka

After he stopped playing, Kikugawa began a new chapter in his football career as a manager. In 1982, he joined a new club called Chuo Bohan, which later became known as Avispa Fukuoka. This club was based in his hometown of Fujieda.

As a manager, he helped Chuo Bohan get promoted to the second division of the Japan Soccer League in 1991. He continued to manage the club until 1994. Later, in 1999, he returned to manage Avispa Fukuoka for one season, taking over from Takaji Mori.

Later Life and Passing

Yoshio Kikugawa passed away on December 2, 2022, at the age of 78. He died from pneumonia. He will be remembered for his contributions as both a player and a manager in Japanese football.
